Immigration Advocacy

The DREAM ACT is expected to have a profound and positive effect on the immigrant community. The DREAM ACT is a legalization program which would grant permanent resident status to immigrants who entered the United States before their 16th birthday, resided in the United States for at least five years and completed their high school education.

It is of utmost importance to support this bipartisan bill, which in the Senate has the support of 14 Republicans and 34 Democrats and in the House has the support of 22 Republicans and 112 Democrats.

The DREAM ACT recognizes a common sense principle: in many instances, children come to the United States because they are brought by their parents; therefore, they are not at fault if they entered the country unlawfully or not. The DREAM ACT would grant those children and young adults lawful permanent status in the United States. In addition, the DREAM ACT will permit these children to obtain financial aid from public universities.

This legislative act possesses bi partisan support in both chambers of Congress. Both presidential candidates spoke in favor of granting legalization to these students. Now it is time for the public to give the legislators one more push and enact this important legislation.
